As with any surgical procedure, there are certain problems
and side effects associated with LASIK. Most of these complications
are temporary and can be treated.
It is important to understand that even though LASIK is highly
accurate, perfect vision cannot be guaranteed.
Under- Or Over-Correction
The 2 most common problems associated with LASIK are under-correction
or over-correction. In either
case, enhancement can be done to fine-tune your vision 3 to
6 months after your initial LASIK surgery.
Wrinkling
This is an uncommon problem. It occurs if the “flap”
is unevenly replaced, possibly inducing astigmatism.
Mild wrinkling usually recedes in 3 to 6 months, but in rare
cases, a second procedure may be needed to smooth out the
wrinkles.
Night-Vision Problems
Glare and haloes are common side effects of LASIK. It is
more likely to occur if you have large pupils,
small treatment zones and a high degree of myopia.
Cases of severe, disabling glare and haloes are few nowadays,
especially with more advanced Wavefront Enhanced Q-adjusted LASIK
technology.

Some post-LASIK patients experience starburst effects due
to swelling of the cornea.
This occurs early in the healing phase and is usually temporary.
In the last few years, laser technology has been directed
towards the problem of poor night vision. Many patients treated using lasers with more advanced technology (such as the Wavefront Allegretto Eye-Q
laser) do not suffer from poor night vision.
Dry Eyes
After LASIK surgery, you may suffer mildly from dry eyes
for a brief period of time. The eye becomes less sensitive
immediately after LASIK, and is unable to produce enough tears
to keep the eyes moist. In general, with the use of preservative-free
eye drops and oral supplements, you will recover from dry
eyes within a few weeks.
Infection
Cases of post-LASIK infection are unpredictable and occur
in one out of 5,000 patients. You will be prescribed antibiotic
eye-drops after LASIK to prevent infection. It is important
that you go for your post-operative visits to ensure your
eye is healing properly.
